He was born on the 21st October 1943 in the village of Gorenja vas - Reteče near Škofja Loka. After graduating from the Secondary School for Design and Photography in Ljubljana he studied first at the Academy for Education, now the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Education (PEF). In 1964, he enrolled at the University of Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts (ALU), which he graduated from in 1968 under professor Maksim Sedej and also finished his postgraduate studies in 1970 under professor Zoran Didek.

He went on study travel to Poland and Germany. He was teaching in primary schools after 1971 and lecturing drawing and painting at the PEF between 1987 in 1997. From 1997 to his retirement he was working as professor and the Head of the Department of Paiting at the ALU.

He lives and works in his native village.
